And I began to think that maybe this time Roger would have faced the first real chanllenge of Wimbleton this year created by Marat Safin, who defeated Roger and got the championship of Australian Open in the year of 2005 after tough five matches. Though Safin's rank in ATP has gone down to No. 75, yet it never has any effect on his being a competitive players, who nobody can reglect easily. Not being a seed player this year, Safin can go so far, which shows his good state. I'm still looking forward to this match very much. It's certain that I hope Roger to win finally. However, it seems not tough match for Roger. He's so relieving as he says after the match in the interview. It's obvious that Roger enjoys the course very much. As he ever tells that he like the atmosphere in the center court in Wimbleton. When the match goes to an end, all audience will rise and applause for both the players, which brings so many good feelings to heart. Maybe Roger feels satisfied and pleasing to receive appriciation from all the ten thousand audience. Roger has entered the final for the sixth time in Wimbleton and is waiting for the winner of another semifinal between Nadal and Schuttler, and his 64 successive winning in the grassland. Anyway, hopefully Roger can get the miracle and creat his own history in the lengendary grassland in Wimbleton.

************************************************************
Articles

Thursday 3 July - As it happens

Thursday, 3 July 2008
Written by AELTC staff

6.39 pm: Oh no! What a way to end your amazing Wimbledon campaign. The pressure gets to Zheng and she serves a double fault at match point down to hand Serena a place in the final.

6.38 pm: Serena challenges a call on the baseline (which was called out) and wins! She now leads 6-5 in the tie-break.

The Bryans, the top seeds in the men's doubles' are out! Bjorkman and Ullyett have taken the match on their third match point in a rain delayed tie that lasted 2 hrs and 58 minutes.

6.32 pm: Serena takes a 3-0, only for Zheng to quickly peg the score back to 3-2. A sublime ace then takes Williams 4-2 ahead.

6.31 pm: In the interview with the BBC, Schuettler openly admits he never thought he'd get this far. In fact, he didn't think he'd get past his second round match with James Blake and that he had plans for the second week. I'm sure he didn't mind rescheduling for a Wimbledon semi!

Zheng and Williams are in a tie-break now.

6.30 pm: Zheng has a set point! But she sends the service return into the net.

6.27 pm: Schuettler's through to the semis! A wide Clement return hands the German a spot in the last four after a match lasting 5 hrs and 12 minutes, several rain delays and spanning two days.

6.24 pm: A superb whipped cross-court forehand by Zheng brings up game point. And ... she wins it with a smash. Can Serena force a tie-break or will Zheng snap up the set here?

Schuettler and Clement are now at deuce on the German's serve.

6.23pm: Felix has asked what an 'unforced error' is. Well, I can say it is an error that is soley down to your mistake rather than forced by your opponent, i.e a double fault.

6.21 pm: Schuettler has broken Clement. He now leads 7-6 and the German will now serve for the match. Can he hold on? It's 40-40 on Zheng's serve on Centre. Exciting ...

6.15 pm: The players are back on the showcourts and warming up.

6.05 pm: Play to resume in five minutes time!

6 pm: Good news. The rain has stopped and the sun is shining above Centre Court. I expect a rainbow is not too far away. Hopefully play will get under way soon.

5.54 pm: Have any of you been at Wimbledon when it's raining? One of my fondest memories was when I was sat on Centre Court as a child with my mum huddled up under an umbrella eating Jammie Dodgers. Ah, I was only eight but I had a great time.

5.47 pm: A fan emailed in earlier asking who leads the ace count in the tournment. Well, as it stands Serena Williams has hit 42, while sister Venus is in second spot with 34.

Surprisingly quarter-finalist Feliciano Lopez is way ahead in the men's list with 110. Mario Ancic has 80, while FedEX has 70. Rafael Nadal is in 27th place with 33.

5.44 pm: There's just been another announcement from officials. It is expected to rain for another 20 minutes. Doh.

5.38 pm: While we've got this this break in play I'd like to direct you to our daily caption competition. Click here for details and you could win yourself a prize from the Wimbledon shop.

My boss David has just come in and said there are still a few spots of rain outside. At first, I thought the rain was a bit of a novelty but now I just wish we could get the Schuettler V Clement match finished. The winner is going to need a bit of recovery time ahead of their semi-final against Nadal tomorrow.

5.31 pm: It's brightening up overhead but the rain is still falling, albeit a little more gentle now.

5.25 pm: The weather can't make its mind up! It's now pouring again. I just stepped outside and in one direction there is a big black cloud but in the other there are blue skies. Weird.

5.13 pm: The powers have spoken! An announcement has just been made saying that even though the rain has eased they are not going to bring the players back on court yet as they are expecting another patch of rain in 20 minutes.

5.10 pm: The rain has calmed down a bit now... I can just see a few spots out of the window.

5.05 pm: Mavi has emailed in asking what the longest ever match at Wimbledon was. When I just yelled that out in the office everyone roared: "It must be one with Todd Martin in it!" But no, I can actually tell you it was a men's doubles match in 2006 lasting a whopping 6 hrs and 9 minutes. M. Knowles and D. Nestor eventually overcame S.O.K Aspelin and T.S.Perry 5-7, 6-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 23-21 in a match spanning two days.

The longest men's singles match was in the second round in 1989. G. Holmes (USA) beat T. Witsken (USA) 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 14-12 in 5 hrs and 28 minutes.

While were at it, the longest match in the ladies' singles was a 1995 second round match that lastest 3 hrs and 45 minutes. C. Rubin (USA) eventually overcame Canadian P. Hy-Boulais 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 17-15.

4.55 pm: It's absolutely chucking it down here now and there is thunder roaring overhead. Now this is proper rain - and I mean the sort of rain usually associated with Wimbledon, not the pansy-style spots we had this morning.

I've just spotted some excitable Scots jumping around on Centre Court. I'm not sure if they know they are being captured on live TV however I'm glad to see they are still having fun.

4.47pm: Bjorkman and Ullyett have had their match against the Bryans suspended due to rain at match point, 8-7 in the tie-break! Could it get any more dramatic!? Zheng and Williams have also come off court with Zheng serving at 40-30, 5-5.

Schuettler and Clement are also off - it's 40-40 and 6-6 there with Clement serving.

4.52 pm: Another brilliant backhand by Zheng hands her a 5-4 advantage. She looks like she's really pumped up out there now. A fist in the air was greeted by a big cheer from the crowd.

Clement has just broken back! It's now 6-6 in the fifth and I still have no idea who is going to win!

The Bryans have had three set points to take their match into a fifth but they've blown it. It's now 6-6 all there.

It's very tense in here!

4.48 pm: The Bryans and Ullyett/Bjorkman are in a fourth set tie-break. The Bryan's need to win it if they have any chance of winning the title here again.

And Schuettler has broken! He now leads Clement 6-5 in their epic quarter-final clash on Court 1. Things can change so quickly! The semi-final place is there for the taking. It's just a case of who can hold their nerve.

4.42 pm: Schuettler (serving at 4-5) has just saved a match point. Will this match ever come to an end!? He eventually holds and levels the score at 5-5.

Meanwhile Serena has broken straight back. 4-3 the score there now. 4-4 in fact, Serena has no problems with her serve and takes the game to love.

4.40 pm: A Zheng smash sets up a first break point for the Chinese wild card. And.... she takes it! Whhhoooohoo. Well done. A brilliant backhand return winner seals the game and hands her the initiative in the set!

4.35 pm: Zheng wrong-foots Serena after drawing her into the net and lobbing her to move 3-2 ahead. It's all to play for in this second set!

Clement is two points from victory on No.1 Court, 30-30 the scoreline with Schuettler serving at 4-5. Eeeeeek, Clement nets and its now 40-30 to the German.

4.30 pm: Serena levels the score at 2-2. She's won an incredible 88% of points on her serve.

Moira has just emailed in to say she's coming to Wimbledon to see the men's semis tomorrow. Lucky you! I'm afraid I have no magic plan to anable you to get an autograph from Rafa. He's normally pretty good at signing them on his way off the court but I do guess you need to get down the front as soon as his match finishes.

4.25 pm: Zheng's backhand has been impressive since the rain delay. At 5ft 4" she certainly lacks the height of her opponent, but she's sure matching Serena on the power front at the moment. 2-1 she leads.

4.23 pm: And Zheng is ahead (well in the second set anyway). An easy service game in fact. Hopefully that will do the Chinese star's confidence the world of good.

4:21 pm: Hey, Beci's back to blog just as Serena wraps up the first set 6-2.

4.17 pm: “Shoots” and “The Key” are the quicker out of the blocks. Schuettler has three game points and takes the second to make it 2-2. Serena is now going to serve for the set.

4.12 pm: Here comes serene Serena, followed by Jie whiz. Glorious sunshine – ah, the vagaries of the British summer (I should have written summer in “…”, shouldn’t I?)

4.09 pm: “Play on all courts very imminent”. Imminentissimo. And as if to prove that, out comes Arnaud Clement with his sun-glasses on. Wunderbar.

4.06 pm: The rain has stopped and the sun is coming back out! Yay, the covers are coming off. Feel free to applaud the messenger.

So, will Serena get the seven games she needs to join Venus in the final or can Zheng Jie turn the tide after battling so hard and saving four set points already? Clement is four games from a semi-final berth, Schuettler four games and a point. That one is so tough to call. Post in anyway and say “Schuettler 6-2” or “Clement 11-9” – I want to know what you think (you guys are important to me, you know that).

3.55 pm: Drew back on duty, thank you Byron and then Beci. It’s teeming with fine rain out there – i.e. lots of it but it’s very fine rain. As soon as there is an announcement from the ref’s office, I’ll let you know.

3.49 pm: The Clement and Schuettler match has just been suspended too. Clement leads 2-1 but the German is 40-0 up on his serve.

3.47 pm: The Bryan brothers has just been suspended at 3-2 to the US pairing in the fourth set but Scheuttler and Clement are still playing!

3.41 pm: Sorry guys, it seems I spoke to soon. There are a few spots of rain and the covers are coming onto Centre Court and Serena has put her rain mac on to walk back into the dressing room.

It's suddenly gone really dark down here in our Internet hub, I reckon it's going to chuck it down any moment!

They are currently still playing everywhere else however I'm not sure for how much longer.

3.38pm: Zheng has just saved four set points to Serena on her serve to bring the scoreline to 5-1 and deuce.

Well done Zheng. She holds and brings the scoreline to 5-2.

3.34 pm: Serena is on top of her game right now. Zheng isn't doing much wrong out there but it's now 5-1 to the former Champion.

Frenchman Clement has taken his quarter final match against Schuettler into the fifth set the crowd were all hoping for after winning the tie-break 9-7.

3.31 pm: Blimey, this match could be over in lightning speed. It's now 4-1 to Williams after another Zheng break of serve.

Top seeds the Bryan brothers are now two sets to one down against Ullyett and Bjokman. My colleague Helen Gilbert has just come in from covering the game and said 36-year-old Jonas Bjorkman (playing in his last ever Wimbledon) has been 'class'.

3.29 pm: Williams holds to 30 to lead 3-1. They are both blasting the ball out there.

3.24 pm: Hooray! Zheng holds to keep in contention. 2-1 to Williams.

Clement has two set points in the tie-break, 6-5, on Court 1.

3.20 pm: Serena holds and it's now 2-0 to the American former Champion. Let's hope Zheng can stop the rot... I think everyone will agree we want to see a competitive semi-final.

3.17 pm: Zheng has been broken in the first game! 1-0 to Serena.

3.09 pm: Naomi Broady's excellent run in the girl's singles has come to an end at the hands of Thailand's Noppawan Lertchewakarn. 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 the scoreline.

However Broady's compatriot Laura Robson has managed to keep the British flag flying. She is into the semi-finals after defeating Bojana Jovanovski, the ninth seed, in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.

Meanwhile over on Centre, Jie Zheng and Serena Williams are about to kick off their semi-final clash. Zheng has got some black strapping on her left ankle. I hope it's not bothering her too much. Can the Chinese wildcard do anything to prevent an all-Williams final? Let me know by posting your comments at the bottom of the page.

Comments and information below are from wimbleton official website. Just to see what a shock the Chinese girl has brought to the world. She showed all her strength, persistence, and the back of her lie millions of thousands of people who support her absolutely and unconditionally. She creates the history in Chinese tennis together with the grand slam, beginning with double women and now contiuously with single woman. In the interview after the match, she told that she had already denoted all the prize she earned in the match to the earthquake region where it's her hometown. Thanks for her kindess, beauty as well as surprises brought by her. Miracle can be going on since there's nothing impossible. So come on Chinese JIE!
*************************************************************
Articles

Chinese star in charity pledge

Tuesday, 1 July 2008
Written by AELTC staff

Surprise semi-finalist Zheng Jie has pledged to donate the prize money she earns from this year's Championships to victims of the Chinese earthquake.

Zheng only got into the draw because she was given a wild card, but she has justified that by beating four seeds on her way to setting up a semi-final clash with Serena Williams.

That makes the 24-year-old the first Chinese player to make a Grand Slam semi and the first wild card to go this far in the Wimbledon ladies' singles. Currently ranked 133, she is also only the second player ranked outside the top 100 to reach this stage.

Her efforts so far have guaranteed her prize money of £187,500 and, if she was to celebrate her 25th birthday on Saturday by lifting the Venus Rosewater Dish, she would collect a cheque for £750,000.

But today she told a news conference that she did not plan to keep a penny of it. Zheng hails from Sichuan, the province that was at the epicentre of the quake on 12 May, which killed more than 69,000 people.

And, after explaining that some of her prize money would be assigned to the Chinese tennis federation - which sponsors the travel costs of all China's globetrotting competitors - she said: "I will donate all my portion and apart from that I will do as much as I can to help the people of the region.

"When I go back there after Wimbledon I will do more charity work and encourage more people to come and support the stricken region.

"I would like to give all my prize money but I cannot. I need to give back something to the tennis association."

Zheng expressed her "surprise" that she was the first Chinese to reach a Grand Slam semi-final and said she had already received many messages of congratulation from her homeland, where her quarter-final victory over Nicole Vaidisova was watched by millions of TV viewers in the early hours of the morning.

She said she got into tennis as a child by accident. "As a child I was very sporty and lively and my parents wanted me to have more practice, to be healthy. At that time there were not many people in China who knew this tennis game, but as soon as I started to play I fell in love with it."
************************************************************

video highlights: zheng jie v nicole vaidisova
match highlights of the ladies' quarter-final between China's Zheng Jie and Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic.
************************************************************

Match Reports

Zheng zooms into record books

Tuesday, 1 July 2008
Written by Sally Easton

Zheng Jie became the first wild card to reach a semi-final of the ladies' singles and the first Chinese woman in the last four of a Grand Slam semi-final as she beat 18th seed Nicole Vaidisova 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.

Zheng, who is ranked 133 in the world and has beaten three seeds already, included top seed Ana Ivanovic, will play Serena Williams in the semi-finals.

Vaidisova was higher ranked and with a bigger reputation but the 19-year-old has not been playing her best tennis for much of this year and was clearly vulnerable to attack. And Zheng made the best of this.

She broke Vaidisova’s first serve and never looked back in the first set. An extra gear gave Zheng a fearsomely fast forehand which she used tactically.

Having built two break points, it was Vaidisova who gifted her a game with a double fault. Sadly, she did the same a little later, which reflected the Czech’s tentative approach and lack of confidence in the first set.

The second set was more evenly fought. Vaidisova worked a break in the fifth game of with a forehand drive that gently grazed the baseline. But the advantage was short-lived as the strength and accuracy of the teenager’s forehand was too often notable for its absence. Soon enough, and sure enough, Vaidisova found herself serving at 4-5 to stay in the match.

But she held on and it was an unforced error by Zheng which gave Vaidisova a chance to take the send the match into a third set. A stunning Zheng double-handed backhand, straight as an arrow, to the forehand baseline gave her break point for the tie-break.

She did a little pirouette of angst behind the baseline when she failed to capitalise on the break and gave the set to the Czech. This was the first set 24-year-old from China had lost in the Championships.

Zheng, though, was undeterred. She got on with the job at hand with quiet focus. The quickest of fist-clenches, with the tiniest of pumps, was as emotive as the Chinese woman got, both to congratulate herself and to gee herself up.

The third set became a little untidy as Vaidisova’s timing tumbled, leaving her to turn to her bench with a shrug of the shoulders and a shake of the head. So it was no great surprise when Zheng broke in the fourth game.

The teenager was clearly out of sorts, and Zheng could taste victory in the air of No.1 Court. Unforced error followed by unforced error gave Zheng a 5-1 lead and the serve for the match.
************************************************************
Players

J. Zheng Interview - 1 July
Tuesday, 1 July 2008

Jie Zheng def. Nicole Vaidisova 6-2, 5-7, 6-1

Q. In today's match there were a few turning points. I would have thought final set, third game, you were Love 30 down on your service and you began to serve what we call the dolly shots: high soft balls, and Nicole hits them out. Was that part of your strategy?

JIE ZHENG: (Through translation.) Actually, in the third game I was trying to make her more movement, because in the second game I was very aggressive, aggressive playing.
But actually it was not very satisfactory. That's what I did in the third game.

Q. When you were made a wild card, did you dream you could possibly get this far?

JIE ZHENG: (Through translation.) No.

JIE ZHENG: (In English.) Every match I thinking is very easy. I just try my best to keep going just like this one. I never thinking I can in the semifinal.

Q. How many million people will be watching you at home in the semifinal?

JIE ZHENG: (In English.) I don't know. But after the match I have 30, 15, some like messages for me. I think maybe many people for watch this match in China.

Q. We all read the official stories about your life. The story is just minimal. Could you say something more about when you were a kid, which was your first racquet, if your grandfather was a tennis player, where did you play, those things, human things.

JIE ZHENG: (Through translation.) There is none of my family member who is tennis player. When I was in my childhood I was very lively and sporty, and my parents would like me to have more practice, to be healthy. To choose to play tennis is purely an accident choice, because at that time there were not that many people who knew this tennis game in China. But as soon as I start to play it I fall in love with it.

Q. Why do you think there are no Chinese men strong in tennis? There is a season, a matter of body or power, or other reasons?

JIE ZHENG: (In English.) Yeah, is tough question. We want to know also (laughter). But I think maybe the Chinese men, you need more the fitness, have more power, like this.

Q. You have some basketball players who are two meters tall.

JIE ZHENG: (In English.) Like Yao Ming.

Q. You don't have Chinese men who can play tennis?

JIE ZHENG: (In English.) Maybe next time. I hope to have more people coming for the Chinese sports. Now I feel the girl coming to play the Chinese. More the boys not too much. Maybe because the table tennis is so well in China. Some people, the boys, some choose to the table tennis. I think so.

Q. How do you feel about playing Serena Williams in the semifinal?

JIE ZHENG: (Through translation.) Serena is two times winner of the Wimbledon game, and a very prominent player in the grass court. For me, I'm the only first time to enter the semifinal. And in year 2004, in the first round, I lost to Serena when she was defending champion. And, of course, I hope I can have better achievements when I'm playing with her. And, of course, I also wish to win. But for now I just want to simply keep my hope as simple as possible.

Q. You are a Wimbledon champion. You won the doubles two years ago. What effect did that have when you went home? How were you received?

JIE ZHENG: (In English.) After 2006?

Q. Yes.

JIE ZHENG: (Through translation.) It was very exciting, of course. But also, it was the same time when the football, the World Cup football, in the same year, therefore it was not received as sensational as the football match. But anyway, the Wimbledon is very historical cup, and it has very far reach affection in China.

Q. Could you describe the place where you learned to play as a child, the court and everything.

JIE ZHENG: (Through translation.) I started to learn the tennis by playing both hands because I was not strong enough. At that time in China, because one coach will have more than 10, 10 to 20 kids learning from one coach. We were all young kids and we were only allowed to watch. For me, one of the reasons I enjoyed learning the game of tennis is because I could know lots of other kids, friends, and I thought this is very fun, very enjoyable.

Q. Is the Chinese government doing anything to encourage more people to play tennis in China?

JIE ZHENG: (Through translation.) China has quite many sports, which are leading in the world. Unfortunately tennis is not one of them, but other sports like ping pong, diving, we are the world leaders. But I think with more and more people gaining better achievements in the tennis game, I believe there will be more people will love this sport in the future.

Q. Is the government doing anything about this is my question?

JIE ZHENG: (Through translation.) The government will sponsor the funds for us to travel abroad to participate in competition, as well as the incentive for us if we have good achievement.

Q. Since you said you gave your money for earthquake victims, I'd like to know how much you can keep of the prize money and how much instead the government takes out of your money. There is a percentage they keep and you can give just your part of the money, or also the part of the government?

JIE ZHENG: (In English.) It's a hard question.

THE MODERATOR: We're here to talk about the tennis as such.

Q. Is part of the tennis. Tennis is part of the life.

JIE ZHENG: (Through translation.) First of all, of course I will donate all my portion. Apart from that, I will do as much as I can to help the Sichuan region people because I'm from Sichuan province, as well. After going back after the Wimbledon, when I go back, I will do more charity work and encourage more people come to support the stricken region and hope people from Sichuan will have their new home as soon as possible.

Q. She's planning on giving her entire winnings?

THE MODERATOR: We're here to do tennis questions. We've been through that.

Q. No, that an incredible, charitable donation on her part.

THE MODERATOR: We are running out of time for English questions.

Q. We are here to work. We are not to listen to just sets, games and points. It's relevant.

THE MODERATOR: Do you want to answer that question?

JIE ZHENG: (In English.) Yeah, it's a very hard question for me, because in China sometime it's a different pression. If you play so well, you have the more pression for you. So I would like to give the all prize money but cannot, you know. I need give back to something like the tennis association, like this one.

Q. Will you be doing anything special for the semifinal?

JIE ZHENG: (Through translation.) Serena, with no doubt, is outstanding player, and so far I haven't found any weak link about her. But as a first time to enter the semifinal, I would rather now enjoying the game than anything else.
